A conflict d evelops b etween the Ba bylon 5 command staff an d the Ps i Corps, an in creasingly auto cratic organiz ation w hich ove rsees and controls t he lives of human telepath s. Commander Ivanova , the second- in-command of the sta tion, is secretly a latent telepath w ho has i llicitly a voided register ing with th e Psi Corps. The Shadows, an ancient and extremely power ful race who ha ve recently em erged from h ibernation , are reveale d to be the c ause of a variety of mysterio us and disturbi ng events, including the attack on the Narn outpo st at th e end of 2258 . Centauri Amba ssador Londo Mo llari unkno wingly enlis ts their a id through his ass ociation with t he mysteri ous Mr. Mord en in the ongo ing conflict with the Narn. The e lderly and ail ing Centaur i emperor, long an adv ocate of reconciliati on with th e Narn, dies suddenl y while visi ting Babylon 5. A numb er of cons pirator s, inclu ding Lon do Mollari and Refa, take control of the Centauri gov ernment by ass assinating their o pponent s and p lacing the late emperor&am p;#39;s unstab le nephew on the thron e. Their f irst act is to start open ag gression a gainst the Narn . After a ful l-scale war breaks out, the Centauri eventually co nquer Nar n in a brutal a ttack involvin g mass dri vers, outlaw ed weapons of mass destruction. Towards the end of the year, the Cl ark adminis tration begi ns to show increasingly totalita rian charac teristics, c lamping down o n dissent and restricting fre edom of speec h. The Vorlons a re revealed to be the ba sis of legends ab out angel s on various worlds, in cluding Ea rth, and are the ancie nt enem ies of the Sh adows. T hey enlist the aid of Sherida n and th e Babylon 5 com mand staff in t he struggle against th e Shadows.
