A con flict develops between the Babylon 5 command staff and the Ps i Corps, an i ncreasi ngly autocr atic organiza tion which oversees and control s the li ves of h uman telepat hs. Commande r Ivanova , the seco nd-in-comman d of th e stati on, is secr etly a la tent telepath who ha s illicitly avo ided registeri ng with the Ps i Corps. The Shadows, an anc ient an d extremely powerful rac e who have re cently emerged from hibernati on, are r evealed to be the cause o f a variety of mysterious and di sturbing eve nts, includi ng the atta ck on the Narn outpost a t the end of 2 258. Centaur i Ambassador Lo ndo Mollari unk nowingly enlists their aid throu gh his assoc iation with th e mysterio us Mr. Morden i n the ongoi ng conflict with the Narn . The elderl y and a iling Centauri emperor, long an advocate of reconc iliation with the Nar n, dies suddenly w hile visi ting Bab ylon 5. A n umber of conspi rators, i ncluding Lon do Mollari an d Refa, ta ke control o f the Centau ri govern ment by assass inating th eir oppo nents and placing t he late emp eror&am p;#39;s unstable nep hew on the throne. Thei r first act is to start open aggression ag ainst the Nar n. After a ful l-scale war br eaks out, the Cent auri eventu ally conquer Narn i n a brutal att ack invol ving mass drivers, outlawed w eapons of mass destructio n. Towards t he end of t he year, the Cla rk administra tion begin s to show increasingly totalitaria n character istics, c lamping down on dis sent and restr icting freedom of speech. Th e Vorlons are revealed t o be th e basis of legends ab out angels on various worlds, inclu ding Ear th, and a re the anc ient enemies of the Shadow s. They enlist the aid of Sherid an and the Ba bylon 5 comman d staff in the strugg le against the Sha dows.
