L enzi& #39;s cr ime flicks te nd to be a cut above the re st because he makes films ba sed on stor ies with a poi nt, and they don&a mp;#39;t lack direction; but this film fe els a bit too wa yward to f ully fit with the res t of his stuff. The film t akes obvious i nfluence f rom Sergio Leon e&#3 9;s landmar k western &#3 9;A Fistful of Dollars&#3 9; (whic h in turn, took infl uence from Akir a Kurosa wa's l andmark sam urai flick Y ojimbo) , in that it features t wo warring fam ilies and a strong char acter at the ce ntre. The cri me that Lenzi focuses on is kidnappin g, and we c entre on a char acter c alled ' Rambo&# 39;. Ramb o is dr agged into th e war between the two fami lies after his brother is killed because of it. Rambo uses h is brains and brawn to pit the two f amilies again st one anoth er, in the h ope of ga ining reveng e for his bro ther&#39 ;s death, resc uing a young b oy that they& amp;#39 ;ve kidnapp ed, and ul timately lettin g the two sid es destroy one anothe r. The film& amp;#39;s bigge st asset is und oubtedly Tomas Milian. M ilian w as put to great use by Len zi in almost all of his cr ime thriller s. The r ange of charac ters he has pla yed for Lenzi is immense , and this o ne is easily o ne of the coo lest. T he character i s called Ra mbo, which immediate ly sprang to mind th e popular Sylve ster Stallo ne characte r - but f or once, the Italians actually ha ven't s tolen this na me as Syndica te Sadists was released first! As usual, the film is wickedly e ntertainin g, as we get to watch M ilian get himse lf involved in the usual arr ay of car c hases, sh ootouts and bra wls. Len zi has got hi m riding a mot orbike this tim e round, an d every scene featu ring it and M ilian is a real standou t! However , the film o ften fe els like it d oesn& #39;t really have anywh ere to go, an d this means th at the r unning ti me is str etched out m ore than it should be. Co mpared to th e crime fil ms of ot her Italian dir ectors, Syndic ate Sadi sts is more than abo ve avera ge; but in re lation to Lenzi crime flicks such as Almost Hum an and The Cynic, The Rat and The Fist - it d oesn&#39 ;t stand tall as one of Lenzi&#39 ;s best. S till, if you&# 39;re lookin g for ninety m inutes of testosterone fuelled ma yhem - Syndi cate Sadis ts will suff ice!
